While many people think that a traditional “Bugout Bag” is for the horde of zombies coming down your block…..it couldn’t any farther from the truth. While most certainly there are wildfires, hurricanes, deep winter freezes and power outages, these events allow for a larger allocation of time before implementing your emergency actions plans.
That all being said….when your phone rings at 3 AM from a number you recognize on the caller ID, 9 times out of 10 it’s never good news and generally requires an immediate call to action to assist a friend or a loved one. Which is why you should always have a 72 hour bag at the ready to leave at a moments notice after you have splashed some water in your face and sucked down a cup of cold coffee you just nuked in the microwave for 30 seconds.
As a rule of thumb you will need the following
- A comfortable backpack in the 16 Liter range
- Cloths for 72 hours including a warm / rain resistant jacket
- Comfortable shoes that are not worn out
- Food rations for 72 hours that are nutritional and no less that 4800 Calories
- 9 12oz bottles of water and some type of a water filter
- 72 Boo-boo kit with a pill row of OTC medicines
- Shelter tarp, mini tent and tent base
- Sleeping bag liner and inflatable pillow
- Paperback Bible
- Folding Knife and Multitool
- Flashlight
- USB thumbdrive with important documents
- Cell phone charge and battery bank
- Backup forms of ID
- An extra house key
- 72 hours of toiletries
This is a simple list that can be custom tailored to you liking but pay attention to the overall weight that should be less than 15 lbs
